Sleek and advanced: the SR-71


We recently visited an Air Force museum, and one of the things we saw and learned about was the SR-71—a US reconnaissance aircraft, and a very advanced one too. It was used from 1964 to 1990 but was then deemed too expensive and taken out of use.

It has no wings because the sleek body serves that function. The part near the back that looks like wings is really the tail. It flew so incredibly fast and high that pilots had to wear suits similar to those worn by astronauts.
