A misunderstood fruit

Tomatoes were thought to be poisonous until 1820, when Colonel Robert Johnson reportedly consumed a whole basket without any adverse affects. But that wasn’t the end of the controversy over this juicy orb. In 1868, a case came before the Supreme Court to decide if tomatoes were fruits or vegetables. At the time, tariffs were to be paid on vegetables but not fruits. The Supreme Court decided that tomatoes were vegetables and that the duties must be paid. Botanically, scientists agree that tomatoes are fruits. Either way, tomatoes have become a much appreciated part of American cuisine!
