Traditional Indian clothing

Indian clothes range from the practical to the gorgeous. All types of colors, patterns and textures can be found. Here are some of the most common types of Indian clothing.

Women’s Garments

The Sari
~Worn with a blouse, it is a long strip of cloth wrapped and tucked around the body.

It can be tied many different ways.

The Choli
~Long, flowing skirt and top, worn with a dupatta, or scarf.

The Salwar Kameez
~Loose pants and a tunic-style top, also worn with a dupatta.

Men’s Garments

The Lungi
~ A tube of cloth wrapped around the lower body that can be tucked up into “pants” for work.

The Sherwani
~Long jacket worn with loose fitting pants that tighten at the lower leg

The Turban
~Can be wrapped many different ways. Popular among the Sikhs.

Some of the finest and most beautiful Indian clothing is demonstrated at weddings.
