Life of yesteryear: Living during the Great Depression

We had over a friend and her elderly mom for dinner. We had a lovely time listening to the mom’s recollections of times past in American history.

Her mom died when she was young, and just then the Depression hit. So her father moved the family to Texas where they got a farm. The father was a lawyer, but no one could afford lawyers at the time, so he did accounting work.

The family was better off than many in those troubled times as they had lots of land to grow food. They raised chickens and sold them. They’d have meat only on Sundays.

Once she got pneumonia when she was 10 or 11 and went to the doctor, a rarity during those times, but there weren’t any antibiotics so she just rested until she woke up better. She didn’t go to the dentist till she was in high school.
